AMD Stock Beat Nvidia By 160 Points In 2026: A Historic AI Boom First

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) spent most of the AI boom chasing Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) from a distance. In 2026, that relationship flipped. AMD shares have surged about 187% this year compared to roughly 22% for Nvidia—a massive 165-percentage-point lead that marks AMD’s widest gap over its rival since ChatGPT launched. Agentic AI shifts that workload. Instead of simply generating a single output, an autonomous agent operates in a continuous loop—planning steps, executing tools like web browsers or calendars, analyzing results, and deciding the next action. That coordination runs on central processing units (CPUs), the general-purpose chips where AMD holds a strong footprint with its EPYC server line. As a result, agentic workflows layer significant CPU demand on top of traditional GPU processing. On AMD’s first-quarter earnings call in May, CEO Lisa Su noted that server deployment ratios have shifted from one CPU for every four-to-eight GPUs toward “a 1:1 configuration.” Following that shift, AMD raised its 2030 server CPU market forecast from $60 billion (growing 18% annually) to over $120 billion (growing over 35% annually). Capable of booking travel, sending emails, and executing transactions, Muse quickly surged to the top of Apple’s App Store. Apptopia estimates cited by TechCrunch show the app drew 1.8 million iOS downloads across the U.S. and Canada in its first 12 days—eclipsing ChatGPT’s 1.3 million over the same post-launch timeframe. The market reaction was immediate. Semiconductor stocks rallied, sending AMD up nearly 10% on Monday to cross a $1 trillion market capitalization for the first time. The buzz around Muse hinges on a fundamental shift in how software operates: agents don’t just wake up to process a prompt. Meta (NASDAQ:META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg called Muse a “24/7” personal assistant, while Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang described it as “always-on.” That persistent, background coordination transforms AI from short bursts of GPU inference into an always-running workload—one that demands far more CPU power. The 2026 Lead Doesn’t Erase Previous 3 Years From the start of 2023, AMD stock has risen about 9.5 times. Nvidia has risen about 15.6 times over the same period. For this reason, AMD would need to outperform Nvidia by roughly another 64% just to match its return since the AI boom began. Nvidia’s market value, at about $5.5 trillion, is also more than five times AMD’s. Su herself has not framed CPUs as a replacement for GPUs. She has called agentic CPU demand “largely additive,” because agents still depend on accelerators to run the underlying models.
