Top US Grocery Chains' Websites Remain Offline After a Major Cybersecurity Incident

Websites of a top global grocery giant remained offline on Saturday as the company continued to mitigate a major cybersecurity incident that started earlier this week. The incident affected brands like Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Hannaford, and Giant supermarket chains, which are owned by Ahold Delhaize, a Dutch retail company that operates in the US and Europe. A quick look at its brands’ websites shows that they were all offline. Stop & Shop’s website said that its online store was offline and that the team was working to restore services. A similar message was displayed on Food Lion, Hannaford, and Giant. Shoppers can buy on its physical stores or use third-party delivery services like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Instacart (NASDAQ:CART). The crisis started on October 12 when Ahold Delhaize confirmed that a major cybersecurity incident had affected its network. In response, management decided to take its systems offline to protect its customers and other stakeholders. It said that it was working with internal and external stakeholders to address the issue. Ahold Delhaize’s challenges are important because of its size, where it serves over 60 million customers each week. It also had another cybersecurity incident in 2024 that exposed personal information of over 2.2 million customers. A study by Verizon (NYSE:VZ) showed that more companies are announcing attacks this year than in the past. This growth is driven by software vulnerabilities, followed by stolen passwords. These vulnerabilities will likely continue to grow as AI agents become more sophisticated. Top companies like OpenAI and Anthropic have announced several incidents when their agents hacked companies. As a result, studies show that spending on cybersecurity will exceed $520 billion this year, up sharply from $260 billion in 2021. Because of AI, a study by McKinsey estimated that the total addressable market for cybersecurity has jumped to over $2 trillion. Some of the top companies that have suffered from major incidents are Wynn Resorts, Stryker, Hasbro, and Rockster Games. Consequently, top cybersecurity stocks have done well this year. CrowdStrike (NASDAQ:CRWD) has jumped by 163% from its lowest level this year. Palo Alto Networks (NASDAQ:PANW) soared by 145% in the same period. Their revenues have risen, and analysts expect this trend to continue. Benzinga data shows that Palo Alto Networks’ revenue will jump 23% this year, while CrowdStrike’s will soar by 26%.
