Lilly Wins FDA Nod For Weekly Insulin, Signs $3.25 Billion InnoCare Pact

On Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Eli Lilly and Co.’s (NYSE:LLY) Onswik (insulin efsitora alfa-gobe), a once-weekly basal insulin injection, for type 2 diabetes. Onswik is designed to deliver steady basal insulin levels over a full seven days. Regulators based their approval on comprehensive data derived from the QWINT Phase 3 clinical trials. These studies evaluated the efficacy and safety of the weekly injection across a population of more than 3,400 type 2 diabetes patients. Throughout each QWINT trial, the once-weekly medication successfully achieved its primary endpoint. The drug demonstrated a non-inferior A1C reduction from baseline metrics, proving comparable to established daily treatments such as insulin degludec U-100 and insulin glargine U-100. According to the clinical data, Onswik maintains an overall safety profile aligning with daily basal insulins. However, medical guidelines prohibit using Onswik in patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes due to a heightened risk of severe hypoglycemia. U.S. patients can access the Onswik KwikPen in the coming months. The manufacturer will distribute the device in two concentrations: a 500 units/mL option and a 1,000 units/mL option. Strategic Multi-Billion InnoCare Pharma Partnership In a separate Thursday announcement, InnoCare Pharma finalized a strategic licensing pact with Eli Lilly to drive the creation of new medicines. InnoCare will utilize its proprietary drug discovery platform and research expertise to identify and progress compounds directed against up to five specific targets. The financial framework positions InnoCare to receive up to $100 million in near-term and upfront payments. Additionally, the collaborator could secure approximately $3.25 billion in future commercial and development milestone payments, supplemented by single-digit tiered royalties from annual net product sales.
