Eli Lilly Launches Global Push to Expand Weight-Loss and Diabetes Drug Access in Lower Income Countries

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) launched the Lilly Change the Course Commitment on Monday, a global health initiative aiming to treat as many people with diabetes and obesity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) as in high-income countries by 2040, saying currently only one person in LMICs can access its medicines for every four in high-income countries. Risks on the Commitment Lilly said it will focus on three pillars: clinical development suited to resource-limited settings, registering medicines in more LMICs with a focus on Africa, Latin America and Asia, and strengthening local health systems. “For 150 years, Lilly has addressed some of humanity’s most pressing health challenges by turning science into medicines that improve lives,” said David A. Ricks, Lilly chair and CEO. He said the company’s oral treatment, Foundayo (orforglipron), which can be stored at room temperature, will help scale access across more LMICs. Lilly said 4 in 5 adults with diabetes and 7 in 10 adults with obesity live in LMICs, where prevalence continues to rise. The commitment follows Lilly’s 30×30 initiative, which expanded access to quality healthcare for 40 million people in resource-limited settings in 2025, five years ahead of its original 2030 goal. The company said its efforts aim to help people extend their lifespan and enhance their quality of life by managing diabetes and obesity earlier, reducing long-term complications and, over time, preventing new cases. Lilly said it will report progress against the commitment through its annual Sustainability Report and at global health forums. Foundayo’s Recent Momentum Foundayo has driven recent gains for Lilly. One-third of new oral GLP-1 patients are choosing Foundayo, a trend the company has said is “growing week on week.” Lilly has also broken ground on a $6.5 billion manufacturing plant in Houston to produce the drug domestically. Earlier in September, Lilly said Phase 3 ACHIEVE-4 data showed Foundayo reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events by 23% compared with insulin glargine. Price Action: On a year-to-date basis, LLY stock has surged about 10.24%. The stock was up 0.26% at $1,187.82 during premarket trading Tuesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
