EXCLUSIVE: Nvidia Is a Stock And a Token — When ‘Retail No Longer Distinguishes Between Ticker and Rail’

Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) used to be a stock-market trade. Now, the same company can show up as a traditional equity, a tokenized stock and even a crypto-adjacent leveraged trade — sometimes for the same investor, on the same screen. CoinMarketCap’s data suggests the bigger story may be the trading rails connecting these markets. Nvidia Leaves the Stock Market "The trending board is a real-time attention index for global retail," Alice Liu, Head of Research at CoinMarketCap, told Benzinga in an email. "Right now, it is telling us retail has stopped distinguishing between the ticker and the rail." CoinMarketCap’s trending board recently featured tokenized Nvidia alongside a tokenized Nasdaq-100 ETF, tokenized Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU), Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG). Roughly one in four of the top 76 trending assets was a tokenized equity, Liu said. As of Sept. 10, the tokenized-stocks category on CoinMarketCap included 1,851 instruments with a combined market capitalization of about $2.3 billion and roughly $2 billion in daily trading volume — a market that barely existed 18 months earlier. The striking part is not that Nvidia can be tokenized. The striking part is that the token can sit beside crypto-native assets on the same trading interface. A tokenized Nvidia product can track Nvidia closely. CoinMarketCap’s NVDAX was roughly flat over the month covered by the interview, broadly matching the underlying stock. But the surrounding crypto market can behave very differently. CoinMarketCap’s data showed tokenized stocks turning over roughly 89% of their market capitalization daily, compared with about 12% for meme tokens, 16% for AI tokens and less than 2% for Bitcoin. Equity perpetuals have also expanded rapidly, accounting for about half of Hyperliquid’s perpetual volume versus roughly 2% at the start of the year. That creates a new market structure where an investor can move between traditional Nvidia exposure and crypto-style products without necessarily changing screens. The Appeal is Partly Structural Tokenized equities can trade 24/7, support fractional ownership and move across borders. Perpetual venues can also offer leverage that is unavailable through conventional cash equity markets. Yet the scale remains tiny compared with Nvidia itself. Tokenized stocks have about $2.3 billion in market capitalization versus Nvidia’s roughly $5.4 trillion equity value. That makes tokenization an access layer, not a replacement for the stock market. For investors, the more consequential development may be what happens when traditional equities, crypto and derivatives increasingly share the same distribution infrastructure. Nvidia is simply one of the clearest examples of a market where the ticker may stay the same while the rail underneath it keeps changing.
